Nuclear power emits no greenhouse gases, yet it is struggling in the rich world

PENNSYLVANIA has played a big role in the history of American energy. Coal has been mined there since the 1760s (Pennsylvania is sometimes called “the coal state”). In 1859 Edwin Drake drilled a rickety well that set off America’s first oil rush. More recently it has produced more natural gas than any other state except Texas, thanks to the vast Marcellus shale that runs beneath it. And though it barely advertises the fact, Pennsylvania is also America’s second-largest provider of nuclear energy—despite the near-disaster at Three Mile Island, a nuclear plant that suffered a partial meltdown of one of its reactors in 1979 (pictured, right), killing no one but scaring millions.
Today Pennsylvania is again at the centre of a shift in the energy industry and Three Mile Island is …

See you in Somerset

LIVING in the shadow of a nuclear-power plant does not bother the three occupants of the “Bar Des Sports”, a one-room affair with formica tables and a blaring television. The owner of 18 years, (“Jacques, only Jacques”), is about as unruffled by fears of an accident as his balding white dog slumped by the door.
That attitude is common in Flamanville, a north-coastal village of stone houses and hanging baskets, where 4,000 employees and contractors work on the two reactors at the local nuclear-power plant, opened in the mid-1980s. But a third, much larger reactor, called Flamanville 3, is likely to become the focus of international attention because it is the model for …

The postal service is set to sell 40% of itself in Italy’s biggest privatisations in 16 years

AS POSTE ITALIANE, which runs Italy’s postal service, starts its privatisation road show today, it is selling more than a 40% stake in itself. The listing, which is due to take place later this month and expected to raise €7.8 billion-9.8 billion (.9 billion-11.1 billion), puts Italy itself in the shop window. This is the country’s biggest privatisation in 16 years and the linchpin of a sell-off programme that the government hopes will pay down at least some of Italy’s €2.2 trillion pile of national debt. It also offers the postal sector another chance, following listings by other European operators and in advance of one by Japan Post, to persuade investors that firms whose traditional business is in deep trouble have a decent future.
Thanks to the ubiquity of e-mail and other forms of electronic messaging, the number of letters delivered in the European Union …

NARENDRA MODI, India’s technophile prime minister, this week spent a good part of his visit to America, the second in a year, hobnobbing with Silicon Valley’s great-and-good. India has long been a supplier of talent to America’s tech firms. Its business-process outsourcing firms are a vital source of export earnings. But for years India has been an untapped market for consumer-facing technology firms. That is now changing. The rise of mobile-internet access has sparked interest in the potential of e-commerce in India. Bricks-and-mortar retailing is very fragmented. A trip to the mall can be an ordeal because of congested roads. In such difficult terrain, e-commerce may easily blossom.
Two home-grown …
